We just listed a huge selection of prayer beads at
Om Tibetan Jewelry. Included in our new beads are some malas we had custom made for our store. Prayer beads come in a variety of styles. A favorite type of prayer bead style for Buddhists is the 108 bead mala. 108 is an auspicious number in both Buddhism and Hinduism. At Om Tibetan Jewelry, all of our long malas have 108 beads. Our short malas, a.k.a. wrist malas, usually have between 16 and 19 beads. The number 108 does not include the guru bead. A guru bead is found at the end of the mala (a guru bead is present on all long malas, and on most wrist malas as well). The guru bead has three holes in it, because both sides of the mala go through the guru bead, and then come out together. Usually there is a tassel on the end of most malas. The guru bead is also often larger than the other beads on the mala. The guru bead is a very important bead, the most important bead on the mala. After the guru bead there is the tassel, and on the end of the tassel most malas have two sets of small counting beads. There are also spacer beads on many malas. Spacer beads are also not counted in the 108, and they are often smaller than the rest of the beads on the mala. Spacer beads help you when meditating, because they can help you keep track of how far along you are in your meditation.
Here are some of our new prayer beads.
