New Prayer Beads from Om Tibetan Jewelry

We just listed a huge selection of prayer beads at Om Tibetan Jewelry. Included in our new beads are some malas we had custom made for our store. Prayer beads come in a variety of styles. A favorite type of prayer bead style for Buddhists is the 108 bead mala. 108 is an auspicious number in both Buddhism and Hinduism. At Om Tibetan Jewelry, all of our long malas have 108 beads. Our short malas, a.k.a. wrist malas, usually have between 16 and 19 beads. The number 108 does not include the guru bead. A guru bead is found at the end of the mala (a guru bead is present on all long malas, and on most wrist malas as well). The guru bead has three holes in it, because both sides of the mala go through the guru bead, and then come out together. Usually there is a tassel on the end of most malas. The guru bead is also often larger than the other beads on the mala. The guru bead is a very important bead, the most important bead on the mala. After the guru bead there is the tassel, and on the end of the tassel most malas have two sets of small counting beads. There are also spacer beads on many malas. Spacer beads are also not counted in the 108, and they are often smaller than the rest of the beads on the mala. Spacer beads help you when meditating, because they can help you keep track of how far along you are in your meditation.

Here are some of our new prayer beads.

The dZi Bead

At Om Tibetan Jewelry, we have a variety of items made using the dZi bead. This bead is of ancient origin, was traditionally made from agate stones, and this stone was once used to grind medicines. dZi beads came to Tibet by way of Persia and they first appeared in Tibet between 2000 and 1000 B.C. dZi beads provide the wearer with spiritual protection. Modern dZi beads are also made from agate. And decorative designs are placed onto each dZi bead in a variety of designs. The number of 'eyes' (dots) on each dZi bead is significant. The eyes of the dZi bead are said to protect the wearer from 'the evil eye'. Old dZi beads are very difficult to acquire now, and so new dZi beads have become very popular, as well as the craft of making dZi beads into other types of jewelry, such as pendants and rings. It is still important to use high quality agate to make dZi beads. And dZi beads, whether new or old, are considered a 'protector' to the wearer.

Here are some examples of dZi beads used to make Tibetan jewelry.

Sterling Silver Pendants

Tibetan jewelry is typically made using what is known as Tibetan silver, or silver plate. But it can also be made using sterling silver, .925. Sterling silver http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifis very popular for people who don't like Tibetan silver. This can be due to allergies or other reasons. For pendants, whether it is made from sterling silver or Tibetan silver doesn't really matter for most people, they just like the better quality of the sterling silver pendants. Sterling silver is much brighter than Tibetan silver, and it can be polished to a clean, beautiful shine. Here are some examples of sterling silver pendants.

Sterling Silver Prayer Wheel Pendant

This pendant is in a prayer wheel design. Prayer wheels are used in Tibetan Buddhism as a form of meditation. When the prayer wheel spins, the prayer, or mantra is said to the Buddha in the same manner as if you were speaking. This pendant has a mantra rolled up inside, and a mantra on the outside of the wheel as well. In addition, this prayer wheel pendant turns on the cord.
