The dZi Bead

At Om Tibetan Jewelry, we have a variety of items made using the dZi bead. This bead is of ancient origin, was traditionally made from agate stones, and this stone was once used to grind medicines. dZi beads came to Tibet by way of Persia and they first appeared in Tibet between 2000 and 1000 B.C. dZi beads provide the wearer with spiritual protection. Modern dZi beads are also made from agate. And decorative designs are placed onto each dZi bead in a variety of designs. The number of 'eyes' (dots) on each dZi bead is significant. The eyes of the dZi bead are said to protect the wearer from 'the evil eye'. Old dZi beads are very difficult to acquire now, and so new dZi beads have become very popular, as well as the craft of making dZi beads into other types of jewelry, such as pendants and rings. It is still important to use high quality agate to make dZi beads. And dZi beads, whether new or old, are considered a 'protector' to the wearer.

Here are some examples of dZi beads used to make Tibetan jewelry.

Sterling Silver Pendants

For pendants, whether it is made from sterling silver or Tibetan silver doesn't really matter for most people, they just like the better quality of the sterling silver pendants. Sterling silver is much brighter than Tibetan silver, and it can be polished to a clean, beautiful shine. Here are some examples of sterling silver pendants.

When the prayer wheel spins, the prayer, or mantra is said to the Buddha in the same manner as if you were speaking. This pendant has a mantra rolled up inside, and a mantra on the outside of the wheel as well. In addition, this prayer wheel pendant turns on the cord.
